PKUMOD Academic Exchange
On January 15, 2022, Wangxuan Institute of Computer Technology Data Management Lab of Peking University (PKUMOD) and the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data Analysis Technology and Application (Peking University) held an academic exchange in Zhongguanyuan Global Village.
With the theme of graph database and big data, many experts and scholars discussed the frontier topics in the field of database, the design of graph computing system and theoretical analysis methods. The meeting was presided over by Professor Zou Lei.
Professor M. Tamer Özsu from University of Waterloo, who is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Association for Computing Machinery and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, an elected member of Science Academy. The title of the report given by Professor Özsu was “A SYSTEMATIC VIEW OF DATA SCIENCE”. The objective of his talk is to provide such a consistent and systematic study of the scoping of data science.
Feifei Li, vice president of Alibaba, ACM/IEEE fellow, gave the lecture named “Cloud-Native Distributed Database: Challenges and Trends”. In the lecture, he argued that in the era of cloud computing, the cloud-native distributed database began to rise due to its scalability, availability, and distribution. However, there were also many challenges. Based on this situation, he introduced the cloud-native database, PolarDB, and their own next generation enterprise cloud-native data warehouse, AnalyticDB. It is developed to integrate and analyze the large-scale structured and unstructured data in real time.
Lei Chen, Chair professor from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Fellow of the IEEE, and Distinguished Scientist of the ACM, gave the lecture named “Data Management for Effective and Efficient Deep Learning”. In the lecture, he discussed some issues on how to manage data for effective and efficient deep learning and some future work.
Professor Xuemin Lin from UNSW is a fellow of IEEE. In his talk,“Subgraph Matching: Past and Present”. Professor Lin focused on a fundamental problem, subgraph matching. He covered solutions for single computer, as well as distributed solutions.
Dr Jeffrey Xu Yu is a Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, he gave a report named “Distributed Subgraph Counting: A General Approach”. In this talk, we discussed a new general approach to count larger k pattern graphs with any orbits selected.
Professor Guoliang Li is the associate director of the Department of Computer Science and Technology, Tsinghua University, and he is the associate director of the Technical Committee on Databases of China Computer Federation. The title of the report given by Professor Li was “AI-native database system”. He introduced the main challenges of database in big data era, and the proposed AI-native database to address these challenges.
Professor Shuai Ma from Beihang University gave a report named “The Efficient Algorithms and Systems for Graph Data”. He discussed the efficient algorithms and systems for big graph data, and introduced the temporal database management system, TGraph, for the analysis and management of dynamic graph.
After the report, experts and scholars also discussed issues such as graph data management and calculation. In addition, the conference was broadcast live on Bilibili simultaneously, attracting more than 1,600 people to watch and interact.
