Intern Opportunity

Data Management Lab of Wangxuan Institute of Computer Technology, Peking University, provides interns opportunity, 2-3 interns are recruited by us. Sophomore and junior undergraduate students are welcome to apply.

Tutor Introduction

Lei Zou, Professor of Wangxuan Institute of Computer Science, Peking University, doctoral advisor;winner of the National Excellent Youth in 2016; the project hosted in 2014 won the second prize of the Natural Science of China Computer Society (ranked first). He is the director of the Knowledge Integration and Intelligent Decision Center of the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data Analysis and Application Technology (Peking University). His current research areas include graph algorithm optimization and graph computing acceleration, graph database systems, knowledge graph systems, knowledge graph-oriented natural language question answering system construction, and knowledge graph construction methods research. At present, he has published more than 50 international top journals/conference papers in the CCF-A database field

What We are Doing

Performance optimization of large-scale graph database systems

As the students learned in the course, a large amount of data is currently stored in relational database systems, such as IBM DB2, Oracle, MS SQL and so on. However, in order to use these relational databases, we need to predefine the schema structure (table structure); the graph database provides a more flexible schema design, which is more convenient for data fusion in the era of big data, Therefore, it is the most rapidly developing new generation database management system in recent years, and it is also the focus of academia and industry. PKUMOD is an early international laboratory engaged in the research of graph database system. In the early stage, we developed open source graph database systems including gStore. Around the optimization of graph database systems, we have published a series of top conference and journal papers in the database field.

Efficient graph computing system with hardware/software co-design

Since people have almost reached the physical limits to transistor scaling today, the Law of Moore is losing its magic and we have encountered a bottleneck of boosting computing systems. Therefore, it has become a hot topic in the computer science community to develop effective computing frameworks and systems considering both the software logic and hardware features. The 2018 Turing Award winners, Prof. John Hennessy and David Patterson, once pointed out in Communications of ACM that a new golden age for computer architecture has come. In this age, domain-specific hardware/software co-design is a vital field. In this context, our team focus on exploiting hardware/software co-design and heterogeneous devices like GPU and FPGA to accelerate complex graph computing problems. In recent year, our works have been published on top conferences and journals including SIGMOD, ICDE, TKDE and so forth.

Multimodal Knowledge Base Construction and Question Answering

Towards knowledge graph construction (KGC) and question answering (KBQA), we have researched and developed a series of knowledge graph systems (e.g., gBuilder KGC system, gAnswer KBQA system, etc.) and published several top-tier academic papers in the fields of NLP, AI, and database.
Moreover, real-world knowledge exists not only in text but also in the visual modality. Introducing multimodal information of images and videos to enrich the knowledge base, and expanding the scenarios of knowledge graph application, are the frontier in knowledge graph research; this is our recent primary research orientation.

What You Will Do

If you join our internship program, you will work with the teachers and graduate students here to discuss research issues, participate in the implementation of the system, and write academic papers. You will be able to choose a direction that you like best and what you are best at, based on your interests. We have published more than 30 papers in the past five years, including 16 international top journals/conferences. Join us and you will learn how to engage in academic research and develop your academic skills in advance, which will provide an excellent background for your application abroad.

Among the outstanding ones, we will give priority to the qualifications for the promotion of postgraduate students, as well as the opportunity to obtain the “Wang Xuan Scholarship”. At the same time, if you consider going abroad for further study, we will provide specific and detailed recommendations based on your performance!
